Chapter Nine

Indie wanted to quit by lunchtime. Her shift had ended, but she’d stayed to keep Hannah company so she didn’t have to eat alone.

“It’s so boring here,” Indie whined.

Hannah snapped open her Winnie the Pooh lunch box, frowned at what was inside. She looked at Indie, all dolled up in a pleated skirt and adorable cap sleeved T-shirt. “Sometimes.”

To a seventeen-year-old girl who didn’t like to read, a summer job in a small college town public library was probably torture.

“When is it not?” She kept her voice low, mindful of the three patrons nearby.

Indie’s hair was twisted in some sort of fancy knot. Hannah wondered if she could do that with her hair. She was getting tired of the same old bun day after day.

“Well,” Hannah said, “there was the time the streaker went through. That stirred things up quite a bit.”

Indie perked up. “Think he’ll be back?”

“Between you and me?”

Indie nodded, her hazel eyes dancing.

“I hope so. He was seriously hot. A college kid doing a prank.”

Indie slumped back into her chair, letting out a dramatic sigh. “I miss all the fun.”

Hannah broke her sandwich in half, gave a section to Indie.

“Thanks.”

“You’re welcome.” They chewed in relative silence for a few minutes until Hannah said, “You know, you can quit.”

Indie nodded.

“Quitting is easy. And frankly, it’s what everyone expects of you now, so it wouldn’t come as any surprise.”

Indie looked at her in disbelief. “Are you trying to get rid of me?”

Hannah smiled. “Why would I want to do that? Then I’d have to eat this horrid sandwich on my own.”

With a grimace, Indie said, “It is pretty bad.”

“Diet.”

“Ahh. You have my condolences.”

Oh, what she wouldn’t do for a foot-long hot dog and a bag of chips. Disgusted, she dropped the plain turkey sandwich back into its baggie. “Show them you can change, Indie. Stay. If for no other reason than to prove them wrong.”

“You offered me this job to get on Mr. James’s good side, didn’t you? You like him.”

Hannah thought about telling her it was none of her business, but there was something about this girl that demanded the truth. If their roles were reversed, Hannah would want the truth, too.

“I do like him. He’s an amazing friend. And I offered you this job to help him, yes. If that helps you in the process too, then all the better.”

Indie picked at the wheat bread, pulling the crust off. “Just friends?”

“It’s complicated.”

“How?”

A toddler wandered past, his mother following close on his heels.

Hannah scrunched her nose. “It just seems like there’s always something between us. Some wall neither of us can break through. And we don’t want to compromise our friendship, either.”

“Dude, that bites.”

“I agree.”

Her Diet Coke can groaned as she popped its top. Indie nibbled her half of the turkey sandwich in silence. Hannah couldn’t keep her gaze from wandering to the window, where she had an unfettered view of Brady’s office.

Dinner the night before had been amazing. She hadn’t been lying when she said she’d missed his cooking.
